Fellowship Programme Offered for Ophthalmologists
We don’t just dream of winning, we train for it! The goal of education is understanding; the goal of training is improving performance.
Prasad Netralaya offers a fellowship programme of 18 months, to qualified ophthalmologists in 4 different subspecialties:
- 1. Phaco- refractive surgery
- 2. Cornea & refractive surgery
- 3. Vitreo-retinal surgery
- 4. Glaucoma
The programme is affiliated with the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, Karnataka (RGUHS). The students will receive supervised surgical training in a phased manner, starting with SICS in common to all subspecialties and then to Phacoemulsification surgeries. Our community ophthalmology wing performs more than a thousand free cataract surgeries in a year. The fellows are expected to participate in the outreach program, camps, preoperative work, and post-operative reviews. They will also take charge of patient care, night duties and corneal procedures on a rotation basis.
The fellows also participate in the rotational shifts in Outpatient Departments (OPDs) — in the sections of the medical retina, surgical retina and cornea. They are encouraged to present papers and research work throughout as well. They must present in our institute’s teaching program for fellows, which is conducted regularly.
Under the Vitreo-retinal fellowship programme, fellows will be expected to take care of the retina clinic under the supervision of a vitreoretinal surgeon. They will be trained to perform retinal procedures, retinal lasers in OPD, intravitreal injections and be in charge of retina clinics once trained. They will be expected to assist retina surgeries and perform retina surgeries under supervision.
Under the Cornea fellowship, fellows will be trained to diagnose and manage corneal conditions and OPD procedures. They will be expected to take corneal donation calls if needed. They will be trained in penetrating keratoplasty and other procedures under supervision. They will also be expected to take corneal donation calls if needed.
Under the Glaucoma Fellowship, fellows are trained in expert-level gonioscopy and basic glaucoma surgeries. They are expected to take care of glaucoma OPD with a consultant and do OPD’s glaucoma procedures. We have already trained 50+ doctors under the Prasad Netralaya fellowship program, and trained some of the most highly-regarded ophthalmologists since 2010 — some of whom have taken up academic-related roles and positions.
All of our learners are given the opportunity to be trained in state-of-the-art facilities with a full range of clinical and surgical experience. Most importantly, Prasad Netralaya’s faculty are fully committed to our learners’ educational goals. It is one of our highest priorities to impart and foster the education of the next generation’s clinicians. In addition to these programmes, we are also committed to providing high-quality medical education to local, national and international eye health professionals. Our international conferences and CME programs are nationally recognised and cover a wide range of topics.
The candidates of the program should assist a minimum of 50 retinal surgeries, and later perform step-by-step surgery under strict supervision. They must also participate in diabetic and ROP screening and present cases, journals and seminars accordingly.
A Short term fellowship offered in Phaco refractive surgery. This programme caters to the need of learning advanced surgical techniques in cataract and refractive surgery.
Over 150 national and international ophthalmologists have been trained under different subspecialties with short term fellowship offered since 2010.
